Caught in the Weeds

When we were young, if someone mentioned hemp, we generally thought they were talking about rope. Hemp was the rope of choice for our sail riggings, anchor chords, and tire swings. We didn’t know that it has been cultivated for over 10,000 years nor that it was used in woven fabric, paper, and sail cloth. We had no idea that the ancient Romans used hemp seeds and flower tops to provide medical relief. We certainly didn’t realize that the British Crown made hemp cultivation the law of the land in the North American colonies nor that the first drafts of the Declaration of Independence were written on hemp paper.

Today, we know that hemp is marijuana’s “kissin’ cousin,” related, but markedly different – similar characteristics, but unique traits. Hemp does not have a mind-altering effect, but its seeds are rich in protein, fiber, healthful fatty acids, as well as a variety of vitamins and minerals, thus many people consider it one of the “superfoods.” The fiber, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals all contribute in making hemp nourishing and moisturizing for our skin.

Knowing that hemp can provide another avenue for a gently exfoliating, moisturizing soap, tickled our fancy. Over the winter and through the spring, we put our creativity to work and are thrilled with the result. Our Bar Harbor Hemp Blend soap bar brings out many of the benefits of this ancient crop. We want Maine Island Soap to be your choice for personal care. We hope this addition to our product line excites you as much as it does us!

As always, thank you for your business and willingness to try new things.

Be well 🙂
