There’s so much going on all around the globe these days that even the most stoic among us can suffer from sensory overload. How many have become dependent on cell phones to do everything from connecting with the world (news, email, videos, …) to taking (and saving) pictures? Many of us have gotten so used to immediate responses from chats and texts, that we wonder if someone is mad at us if we have to wait for a reply.
It has been said “that with great power, comes great responsibility.” While at the time “power” referred to people in positions of power, the adage can now apply to electronic capabilities. In 1998, the romantic comedy “You’ve Got Mail” foreshadowed the power of email when Kathleen, thinking of her email friend writes: “What will NY152 say today?’ I wonder. I turn on my computer. I wait impatiently as it connects. I go online, and my breath catches in my chest until I hear three little words: ‘You’ve got mail.”
Today, there’s a part of us that almost constantly listens for the ringtone that signifies a call, an email, a text, a Snapchat, and so on. Maybe it’s time we each pledge to just disconnect and simply “take a breather” and enjoy some of the natural world.
